The Morris Winchevsky School

  • Are you looking to strengthen your child’s Jewish roots within a cultural, non-religous context?
  • Are you in a non-traditional or mixed culture family, and still want Jewishness to be a part of your child’s life?
  • Is social justice (Tikkun Olam) a value you want your child to learn?

Then have we got a school for you!

The Morris Winchevsky School

  • provides your child with the opportunity to learn about their Jewish heritage within a secular humanist framework
  • teaches Jewish history, traditions and culture, and their relevance in the modern world
  • emphasizes Jewish struggles for freedom and equality in the past and the present
  • integrates a flavour of Yiddish, Hebrew and Jewishness ("Yiddishkayt") into activities and events
  • values an artistic focus, using music, drama, visual arts and experiential learning to enrich our program
  • welcomes multi-cultural families, single-parent families, same-sex parented families, and self-identified Jews
THE MORRIS WINCHEVSKY SCHOOL allows our students and their parents to create a mix-and-match approach to the curriculum by choosing which modules the students take. This means that each student's education can be tailored to their unique needs and interests. Students can take one or more of the 5-week long modules. In future years, multiple modules will be offered each week so as to offer even further choices. Each module is led by an expert in the field and is designed to be accessible to children ages 4-18. Between modules, TSJCS will offer family event days coinciding with the Jewish holiday calendar where the students and their families can join the rest of Toronto's Secular Jewish Community School in celebrating our secular Jewish traditions.

For 2008-09, the following modules will be offered:

In addition, students can enroll in optional language classes where they will learn the alephbet and basic Hebrew and Yiddish vocabulary.

The Morris Winchevsky School (MWS) was founded in 1928 by members of the United Jewish People's Order. (Click here for historical information about MWS). Today it continues as part of Toronto's Secular Jewish Community School which is committed to perpetuating an understanding of the traditions of social justice and humanism and to making secular Jewish life relevant and accessible through a wide variety of cultural, social, and educational programs.
