"While Shaina looks forward to her engaging, hands-on Sunday morning classes every week, my husband and I have come to look forward to the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of Winchevsky events, and the opportunities to schmooze with our fellow Shule parents."

MWS parent

Your Trip of a Lifetime: Living the Jewish Immigrant Experience

Get ready for your journey as a Jewish immigrant to North America! With your new identity and passport, we'll step back in time to explore your arrival to this country. What was the trip like? Where did you live? What did you bring with you? What work did you do? Did you get a new name? What games did you play? What foods did you eat? How did you make a Jewish community? How did you learn English?

Through stories, songs, activities, objects, art and food (of course), we'll experience Jewish immigration to North America through the eyes of the children who lived it. Students will be encouraged to interview family about their own journeys to Canada. Plus, we'll take a step forward to experience the life of some new Canadians today. And we'll even go farther back to see how Jews have always been a people on the move.

Carly Steinman is a social policy advisor for the Ontario Public Service. She is the former Social Action Coordinator for the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism, and was a longtime teacher at Temple Emanu-el. Carly has led workshops all over Toronto about sweatshops and the garment industry. She lives in Toronto with her husband Jonathan and their 2-year old Isaiah, and they look forward each year to singing Have you Been to Jail for Justice at the Winchevsky Centre on Rosh Hashanah (although have never been to jail themselves).
